Yes, indeed it is an aac file. I can create these directly from a wav file extracted from a CD, or:
mplayer -ao pcm grotesque.mp3 produces an intermediate file called audiodump.wav, then: faac -q 75 -w audiodump.wav encodes it as aac, and the -w option encapsulates it as mp4 (or m4a, actually). So, I copy audiodump.m4a to the phone, and it can be played! I checked, and .aac files are ok- the mp4 is an unnecessary step. Now for the downside- even if I copy the new aac file to the ringtones directory on the phone, I can't select it from within the 'select ringtones' app. I suspect DRM here for sure, and that the ringtones must be officially sanctioned downloaded and charged for files from my phone provider.
