There are many more modern distros for you to chose from and many 
places/people in Christchurch who could help you get one.
If you are new to Linux I would recommend trying either Mepis, Kubuntu or 
Ubuntu

Yes that is always welcomed but you may find with another more modern distro 
you may get more success.
