on the one that you want to log in to ( called the client ), in the file 
/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config, ensure that the following line

DisplayManager.requestPort:     0

DOES NOT EXIST - or is commented out. You may need to restart X to enable this.

on the one you wish to log in from ( the server ), type

X :1 -query A
( where A identifies the machine - either an IP address or a name that resolves 
)

And you should be up and running.
<Crtl><Alt><F7> should return you to your original desktop, and <Crtl><Alt><F8> 
will return you to the remote one.
