I have noticed the same thing with trac at work, with local file
authentication.
At a guess, it is some sort of housekeeping, maybe session tidy up?
I would suggest asking the trac developers.

I'm guessing that if I don't use it for a while then the
authentication times out and it needs to reauthenticate to AD in the
background, but how do I prove that (and hopefully speed it up)? I
can't see the authentication in any of the logs.
