Timeout
in httpd.conf ( or whatever your distro is mangled to ). It's usually
set to 5 minutes though, so unlikely to be a problem.
KeepAliveTimeout
may help if you're short on connections (mod_info running will help
check). If you've got the prefork MPM running ( most do ), then it may
be worth starting up a few more servers and leave them ready for new
connections... you'll have a block like this to tune

StartServers 5
MinSpareServers 5
MaxSpareServers 10
MaxClients 150
MaxRequestsPerChild 0
</IfModule>
If you've got
HostNameLookups On
that may slow you down... logs the client name rather than IP addresss.
I'd start with mod_info and get an idea of what the server's doing.
