Often the prongs on the plugs on cheapish equipment aren't long enough and/or the slots on cheap multiboxes are too deep. I had this problem with Xmas lights - two of the four worked in the multi box, two didn't. All worked fine plugged direct to the wall. there is mention here that the Chinese pattern plugs are almost, but not entirely the same as the NZ/Australian ones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_plugs
