OK! just went to caldera 3.1.1, kde2, k menu, as below, config, pref, system,login manager. (that's close, anyway) sessions tab, type startxfce in the box at lower left, this will highlight add, click add and reboot and that's it. xfce is on the menu, select it and it should work. This assumes a build from source, and as user you have typed xfce_setup at a console. (for each user who wants to run xfce, I think) I assume the rpm install will work also, but I didn't have the required xscreensaver installed for the rpm. hope this helps.
