ALSA upgrade

I have ALSA 0.5.12a installed.  I can't get sound in XINE - it complains 
that I need ALSA 0.9.0.  I have the 0.9.0 tarballs, but how do I upgrade?  
Simply compile?  Remove all old alsa stuff first?   Thanks.
