I have a fairly modern system, OS Release : 1.1.2 release 2.4.5-win4lin Version : #3 Wed Jul 4 16:01:48 EDT 2001 built with: gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314 (egcs-1.1.2 release
I have been using two large maxtor drives, both 80 gigs. I am trying to install a third 80 gig drive, drive hdd, which differs from drive 2 (hdb) by only one letter in the model number. The bios auto detects the drives with no problem, and reports 255 heads for my problem drive, hdd. HOWEVER, LINUX INSISTS THERE ARE ONLY 16. Hard disk 2 : /dev/hdb Model : MAXTOR 6L080J4 Serial No : 664132556833 Capacity : 76340 MB Cache : 1819 KB CHS (log) : 9732 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors CHS (phy) : 16383 cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors Hard disk 4 : /dev/hdd Model : MAXTOR 6L080L4 Serial No : 664209711463 Capacity : 11833 MB Cache : 1819 KB CHS (log) : 24042 cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors CHS (phy) : 16383 cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors I have set up the bios identically with both drives. I have tried feeding boot parameters to the kernel with lilo. I have read and tried to follow the suggestions (so many) in the Large Disk How to. Nothing works. I have run Maxtor's installation software against both drives. It says that EZ-Bios is not installed on either one. I did try to prepare the drive with Maxtor software, but, I didn't have a windows or other boot disk as required by the Maxtor software, so I don't think anything was done to the drive. Any insight appreciated, Joel _______________________________________________ Linux-users mailing list - http://linux-sxs.org/mailman/listinfo/linux-users Subscribe/Unsubscribe info, Archives, and Digests are located at the above URL.
