I finally got 2.5.40 compiled, by applying the BK4 patch. It's definitely different from 2.4.19. Sound quality is definitely better (I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz), and I like having Alsa part of the kernel now. It seems somewhat slower, though, and hogs my memory. I'll admit to using bloatware, but as soon as KDE gets fired up, I check free, and it reports about 400mb of RAM in use, whereas I only used about 150 to 200mb with 2.4.19. I don't think my data's about to get lost, so I'd say if you're feeling up to a new kernel, try this one.
