begin Tony Alfrey's quote:

| Ever since 8.1 came out, the amount of angst and problems seem to

| just new users or does it seem that 8.1 might have been a little
| "rushed"??

there's angst on the suse list with *every* release, until the
workarounds are discovered and added to the common lore. in this
regard, it's not enormously different from other distribution lists.

you'll notice that many of the complaints are yast-related. on red
hat, many of the complaints are related to their updater. i suspect
that the ximians hear much the same thing. this has to do, imho, with
the apparent fact that when you set up all kinds of automated bells
and whistles, it does not reduce but instead changes the things you
need to learn, not unlike the move from manual to automatic cameras,
in which you needed to learn just as much, only this time it had
little to do with photography and instead now had to do with
automated systems specific to that particular camera. for those who
already knew photography, this meant learning how to override the
favors the camera company had done for them so, allowing the
photographer to make use of his photographic skills.

it would be far better, imho, if linux the things linux distributions
required us to know had to do with linux rather than with the
particular distribution's way of doing things. we're turned into a
little bit of a tower of babel.
