Generally speaking, webcam software requres the 'Video 4 Linux' kernel support, and that is geared towards webcams, it won't work with a still picture only camera.

You need to use some type of webcam software that can snap a pic from
the stream. I dont use linux for this so cant tell you what software
would work.

Re: Nikon Coolpix 2500 and tethering to a computer

Now that the coolpix is working fine as intended (take pictures, attach
camera to usb port, and mount the camera), I want to make it work
perhaps in a way that wasn't intended.

The problem with the scenario above is that when the usb cable is
plugged into the camera, it is no longer possible to keep taking
pictures. My hope is that this camera, or any other type of digital
camera, while hooked up to a linux computer via the usb port, can be
used to take pictures, and those picture can immediately be made
available to a program running on the linux box for further processing.
The idea would be to
rename, label, and transmit the photos as soon as they are taken.
Having to take a group of photos, then plug in the cable, etc. might
be too much of a bother in a real world situation.

Any insights appreciated.
