This has been fixed. The problem turned out to be the default gnome mixer in RH 8.0. As soon as that was activated it stopped all sound from the cdrom. I tried kmix and aumix. Both of those indicated that audio from the cdrom had been turned off. Either would turn it back on. However, going to the gnome menu, selecting Sound & Video, then Volume Control would immediately kill the audio.
