The usefulness of a site like ShieldsUp is that it gives you the ability, from inside, to initiatate a test from outside, to see if that firewall you just put up is working. If there is a better such site available, I'd sure like to know about it.
I use a shell account on an external box for this... i.e. dialup to the internet putty/ssh to my ADSL connected linux box and then run nmap against the new network/host....
