Hmmm. The upgrade as such is mainly contained in the kernel, and Xfree, yes, 
of course everything else is ++ but these are the biggies relative to 
incompatibility.

The kernel 'incompaiibilty' isn't a hardware issue, either the damn thing 
will install, complete with bigger better faster pppd, or it wont', but Xfree 
IS a hardware issue.

If you're _that_ worried about an older laptop, why not initially compile and 
install Xfree 4 on your existing e2.4 base, keeping of course 3.3.6 as backup?

You could save some time here and simply rpm Uvh all the new xfree stuff from 
the cd, then run xconfig. (/etc/X11/XF86Config files are _not_ compatible 
between the two releases). If things go bang, simply re-install the earlier 
rpms.
