I'm having a really hard time parsing that sentence. "Upgrade
contained in the kernel", and what does "++" mean?
When I think of upgrade problems, I usually think about syntax and/or
location changes for configuration files, maintaining settings from
the old installation, making sure various libraries are installed and
compatible, etc.

That sounds like a good idea.

Luckily on this computer I haven't done much customization yet,
although it took me quite a while to get X working. Therefore the
main thing I will have to re-do is X setup. (ironically if you read
the XF86 docs you get the impression all the setup and detection is
much improved in 4.x, but then I keep seeing people say that eW 3.1's
install routine is much worse than the older ones about setting up
sound and video hardware)
