As it turned out the modprobe worked fine. The problem was I used MAKEDEV audio to
setup /dev/dsp and this got permissions 660. Once I changed the permissions to 666,
marvelous sound.
Also, it appears that most distros have the sox package installed by default, and xfce
uses sox (or play) to render sounds. Gentoo didn't have this package marked as a
dependancy for xfce.
All is better now.
