I did that too. My son and one daughter both ended up using linux, since
windows just wouldn't run on either or their two machines, after a while.
My son got a laptop for school, and had to replace windows98 with XP,
because the latter would crash several times a day. XP hasn't crashed yet,
though.
My daughter hates me but uses linux mostly.
My wife's 98 machine is still working fine. 
The only reason for using windows is AOL. I thought AOL and MS weren't
getting along, but AOL keeps windows in my house.
