I had this exact same problem last weekend and found that same
ubuntuforums thread, this would be a deal breaker for newer users. I
could understand a beta or RC not getting right but a final release?
Booted into the live disk it took me a while to figure out that grub
needed to be installed into sdb6 in the live environment (sda6
normally). Last time I needed to do this there was a way of determining
the partition a grub folder or file is on to tell me the correct
partition but I didn't quickly find that on google, I ended up looking
at a backup copy of my fstab file instead which pointed me to /.

I too went "phew".

Cheers,
Roger
