Can I suggest using the Ubuntu based version of Linux Mint. It has all the proprietary driver and codec stuff that Ubuntu leaves out for philosophical reasons, so many things that don't work easily in Ubuntu will work in Mint. The Debian version of Mint is not as polished and less stuff works, according to Mint's own website. Mint is sticking with Gnome rather than Unity, even the Ubuntu based Mint.
