Does it still happen after reboot?

Not on Ubuntu, but on Fedora I had something similar after a kernel
upgrade.

On Fedora if you upgrade the kernel using their default package
management app you are told to reboot your system in order for changes
to take effect.

What happened was I did the upgrade with YUM, which has no notifications
to this effect, and continued to work without rebooting the system. At
one point when I tried to change USB sticks the entire system froze
after the umount.

The reboot - power off/on in this case - cleared the problem and didn't
happen again.
