Hi All,
In response to your questions and suggestions...
(1) Yes, I rebooted both systems immediately after updating the kernel,
as it advised.
(2) The reason why I assumed it was the kernel update: That was the
only change to both systems, between the time when they operated
normally and the time when they crashed immediately after "Safely
Removing" external USB drives.
(3) I did not replicate the fault because:
(a) It happened to two different systems under identical circumstances.
(b) It resulted in filesystem errors that needed manual correcting.
(c) It "discombobulated" files associated with other applications
that were open at the time of freezing.
(d) When I replicated the actions after booting into the /previous/
kernel version (2.6.32-32) the system lock-ups didn't occur.
(4) Volker said something about reporting my findings to "buntu", but a
search of Wikipedia found no such thing, and Googling it only got me to
discover /this/ website...
uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ow!buntu
... which sent me off into an hour of side-splitting laughter at various
computer and political pages at Uncyclopedia.
So, I should just go through this process, then?
