I don't think the kernel is old, any 2.6 version kernel should detect a dhcp ethernet connection to the router by default and just work. Atheros, 3com and Intel wireless chips on pc's/laptops are usually detected and Ubuntu may have a gui tool to configure the wpa supplicant (key authentication) files. I second Andrews recommendation of the "wicd" proggie which does it all for you to detect and connect to ethernet and wireless. Ubuntu should have it in its package pool as it is a gnome tool. A Netgear router problem could be that the woosh gateway address is not set up on the router so you have to get the gateway address from woosh support and log onto the router and configure it. I remember having to do that with a woosh wireless modem. Another possible cause is dhcp address lease is turned off or set mac address only on the router. What error messages are they getting from Ubuntu? Welcome to the list. cheers, keith. _______________________________________________ Linux-users mailing list [email protected] http://lists.canterbury.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/linux-users
