Err, you only download the message body once from an imap server. Once
it's local, it's local. You've just got a remote backup copy for
reference.

Not for me. I use procmail as my LDA, and deliver directly into mail
folders whenever possible*. I then use dovecot / roundcube to access
them, Evolution ( yeugh! ) or browser to access.

I currently have about 3.5GB of archives and it's working fine. In fact,
it's been rock solid for years, which is more than you can say of my VPS
provider!

I really suggest you look further at IMAP. That way, the theft of your
PC/lappie is not the end of the world.
