I am a Telco technician who fixes adsl faults. I often come across failing modems that are hot to the touch - all brands. A lot has to do with placement. I won't lecture you passive cooling, just pointing you in the right direction. It may be that you've already placed it in the best position for cooling, in which case it may just be a manufacturing defect. I have my modem mounted on the wall (out of direct sunlight) using the bracket that came in the box. It hasn't overheated yet in over a year.
