Oops. If components have already been cooked, the suggested changes might be more applicable to its replacement. Some providers will send out a free modem if you agree to stay with them for 24 months. If you break the contract you get billed for the modem. If you're still in a contract and using an ISP supplied modem you can get a free replacement for hardware failure, but probably not in your friend's case since it was an overheating thing.
