You seriously want to avoid ATI graphics on Linux at present, the recent catalyst drivers are completely broken.
I am using an AMD7850 on my work machine running slackware 14. While the drivers are a bit hit and miss I would not call them completely broken. I am using the 13.4 drivers with zero issues. Anything before 13.4 had issues with a single OpenGL extension which was not really a huge problem, just that some OpenGL scenes would not render projected textures accurately. But that is not completely broken by any means. And if you want OpenCL performance like I do then AMD absolutely stomps nvidia by a factor of 4 or more.
I also have a Debian Wheezy server running an AMD 5770 card using the Catalyst driver with no issues.
It is a good note though, I realized that all the new AMD APU chips use Radeon 7xxx chips which aren't supported by the OSS driver yet. So even more so I would recommend Intel for an integrated solution. While I have no problem using the fglrx drivers they aren't really an out of the box solution on any distro.
