Experience with a PhenomII X6 1090T. The foss driver was nowhere near
good enough for what one would expect although usable, but I didn't try
the propriatory driver because I didn't want to invest the time because
I use an nvidia card anyway. The nvidia foss driver is diabolical -
slooow, buggy, max resolution less than monitor i.e. unusable/useless. I
have never had a problem with nvidia in many years. Happy to try the ati
propriatory driver next time I have cause, but based on their past
performance and reputation, being forced to choose, I'd buy nvidia
instead of running the risk and spending time on some ati stuff.

For a laptop my first 3 choices would be intel, 4th nvidia, and 7th ati.
Too risky there because useless components can't be replaced.
