Hello All,

Aftermatch report for ALPS (Android Linux Phone Support) group last night.

1. This effort doubled the size of the average GNU/Linux workshop, though admittedly one was asleep in a pram :)

2. We settled on the third Tuesday night monthly, 7.30pm-9.30pm in the South Learning Centre lab - next is on 21 August, now booked.

3. Modding Android phones will become the shared hobby of an ALPS core, and 100% synchronicity was revealed in that www.postmarketos.org from www.alpinelinux.org is the direction we are traveling for the software tools.

4. www.android-x86 8.1 (Oreo) rc1 worked really well on the lab PC, with a great built-in terminal emulator, picking up ethernet but unable to dial out (though it really wanted to); lesson #1 is all of the gmail / google registration / location etc that it is trying to extract, before you can get a clear 'desktop' for work: a really searchy engine!

5. A very odd 'missing txts' between a Spark Android and a Vodaphone Nokia user was tested then referred on to the individuals' service providers - any other suggestions here?

6. More synchronicity, as on the way home, Android just became huge in the news (holding 75% of the European phone market): http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport/audio/2018654276/google-fined-4-point-3b-by-eu

7. There is definite demand for deeper experience with (GNU and) Linux ICT operating systems, so the ALPS team will press on. New participants very welcome.

Reminder, next GNU/Linux workshop is Weds 1 August, 7.30pm-9.30pm in the SLC lab.

Thank you for all the support in coordinating these two user groups.

Rik
