Aha - "Debian most advanced" is 1.06 from May 2001. Not 1.08 from Oct 2002. And certainly not 1.10 from Jan 2004.
Debian is not exactly known for always tracking the latest developments...
Concerning these "error messages": they are warnings only.
If they are warnings only -- why doesn't the switch to UTF-8 succeed? (for the keyboard that is, for the display it works).
Try 1.10.Where can I find it?
