A small caution:  *some* Japanese people think this is an issue.  It is
very difficult for outsiders to assess *how many* do.  We are naturally
hearing from the people who are most upset; it's hard to tell how
representative they are. 

Japanese authorities and scholars -- people who *did* expect to have to
deal with it on a day to day basis -- were involved in the design and
implementation of Han unification.  This was not some hideous Western plot
foisted on Japan from abroad.
