As a Project Gutenberg volunteer, I’ve been submitting new texts in Unicode, even those in English, to preserve what the author wrote. (They’re fairly tolerant of this, and post my version along side the ASCII one.) I’ve started entering my new texts in Emacs21 (which seems to handle Unicode fairly well out of the box) and I remapped my keyboard (in X) to place ’/‘ on the apostrophe key, ſ on the left bracket key, ”/“ on the right bracket key, and ‐/— on the hyphen key. Unfortunately, I’m the type of person who runs everything out of one konsole, and I keep typing ‐ instead of -. I’ve ended up mapping - to shift‐ſ, and ' to the / key and -/_ to - key on the keypad. Has anyone else made a ‘more modern’ English keyboard, and how do you deal with Unix?
