SuSE 9.2

1) The keymap shortcut Ctrl+Alt+K

I haven't modified any configuration files by hand, beyond the export
LANG=el_GR.UTF-8 in my .profile. That modification was made using the 9.0 SuSE,
because the Greek language keyboard map and the Greek language(=unicode) font
did not work without it. I did not change it back when I upgraded to the 9.2,
so I don't really know if 9.2 would have worked "right out of the box".

"Did not work"?

The unaccented greek vowels did not come out of the map until I changed the
.profile, and the applications were displaying '?' (question marks) for all the
letters. There was some complex mapping issue going on. I was happy it worked
with my modest change. That's why I was wondering what the intent was. Was I
supposed to change anything to get the unicode support? I think not, because
the current Fedora core works fine without any changes (but the Greek Open
Office is broken, more on that later...) right out of the box.

By experimenting on the 9.2, I defined an "Alternate" shortcut for the keymap
switching, using the KDE control panel, called it Alt+Shift+F12, and it works.
I mean, it correctly rotates through the keymaps I have defined. [I wanted
Alt+Shift, to mimic the way XP works, but the program still maed me put in the
third key.]

By the way, the current Fedora Core exhibits the same Ctrl+Alt+K behaviour [but
the current Debian works as you would expect.]

2) Yes, the floppy and the CD-ROM (the removeable media) under KDE are hunting
for something when they should be sleeping, which worries me, because these
devices work fine (as I would expect) under GNOME.

But GNOME still reports an xkb crash, so I haven't figured out how to get the
keymaps to work under GNOME. More on that later...

Gotta run. Be back tomorrow.

Thanks

Elvis
