Thanks, Laurent! That solved it, turns out (K)ubuntu ships with some (older)
version of uvcvideo... Now, everything works like a charm! Where do I send
the flowers/beer*? ;)

And just to get this noted (might save somebody some frustration): if you are
running compiz/beryl and get crashes upon running luvcview ("X Error of
failed request: BadAlloc"), you are probably running an Intel 965/X3100. Try
the "-w" luvcview option to disable the buggy (on this particular card and
with compiz...) SDL acceleration.
