Well, Kevin, I'm not sure what exactly is wrong, but it is important 
that the .iso is burned to the CD as an "image".   The mention you make 
of an option to make bootable leads me to think that perhaps you burned 
the .iso file to the CD as a file, and enabled some sort of "make 
bootable" option...

Anyhow, look for a "burn as image" option, and use that.

Finally, if you are just downloading a distro, you might want to look at 
something more current than RH9.   Fedora is the continuation of the Red 
Hat home users' series.  There are also many other choices that are 
often recommended, such as Ubuntu, SUSE and others.
