gcc is a required app, it has to be installed or you
cannot even install an rpm.
both rpms and debs are configuration macros for gcc to
install the software ( essentially )
they are working with only the last step, the make
install, as the contents are the executables, but
basic development tools are installed on all linux
boxes as a required set of tools

I'll look at archive, as I don't know which distro
this person is using, but thier package manager will
have the ability to install to meet requirements (
meta rpm )

I agree, no need to make someone run when they are
just learning to walk with the os.
