Gnome and KDE are just X-Windows Desktop environments... either one... or any other of the numerous GUI desktops will be able to run Thunderbird, Opera, Firefox, etc. Personally, I like KDE. A lot of the apps on your Suse box are ancient, like vi, cat, sh, csh, ksh, etc. They still work, and serve a purpose, so they remain.
