Helo Chad, I know that's an old kernel and sure I've think to update but I'm 
curious because the manual said it had been tested for kernel 2.4.x and worked.

  Wow, that's an old kernel.  Ever think of updating that guy?  I'm sure
  there's several known security issues with a kernel that old.  I know
  that the 2.6 kernels have the e1000 driver built in.

  Install the kernel source.  I'm sure Redhat provides a kernel source RPM.
