Generally linux is not required to 'recognise" your cable connection.
Normally you will have this:

  +-----------+            +-------------+ 
  | Linux box +--ethernet--+ cable modem +--cable--->internet
  +-----------+            +-------------+ 


Usually, as far as your Linux box is concerned, the cable modem is a DHCP
server. All the Linux box needs to do is recognise your ethernet card
and have a DHCP client installed. So you just configure the networking
on the Linux box to be "automatic" or "use DHCP". Then it should work.

The exact incantation for Suse I do not know, but if you've done a
configure-the-network step, I would go back to that and ensure you're
configuring it for DHCP.
