I have never used Suse, but in Ubuntu 5.x you have to activate the 
ethernet controller. For some reason it defaults to disabled. Go to 
Administration, then networking. When you see your ethernet card on 
the list click properties and enable the device. If it's not on the 
list, you may have an unsupported card.
