Because you have gmail.

They consider it a feature, and I see this question (or people
reposting, saying they didn't see their message) on many lists.

Gmail considers it a feature, most people consider it a royal pain in
the neck.

If you post to a mailing list to, as gmail says, to "avoid clutter" the
message will not appear in your inbox. Any reply to it will appear in
your inbox, but your original post will not.

In my humble opinion, this makes gmail a bad choice for mailing list
accounts.

There have been many requests for them to change it, but so far, it
seems as they are not going to do so.

I should probably add that question and answer to the faq.

Xander: Isn't that what they called The Slayer?
Willow: Buffy, ohh scary.
Xander: Someone has to talk to her people. That name is striking
fear in nobody's hearts.
