Ubuntu and its clones are, (as is Debian in general) often a little
peculiar about running apps not gotten from apt-get.  They put libraries
and such in strange places,which is one possible reason.  

You can try going into that firefox directory you've created, or even
from your home directory just try doing

firefox/firefox  

at a command line (that is, from an xterm) and see what happens.

When you did apt-cache search firefox, didn't they list a program that
could be gotten through apt-get?  (You can also try apt-cache search
mozilla-firefox and see if you have better luck.)
