depends on what you like and what you need / wanna do with your comp.

some general info:

1. Fedora Core -> very good distro for GUI oriented user, use gnome as
default.
2. Debian -> lots of software available and many many people will
recommend this distro.
3. Mandrake / mandriva -> newbies distro, KDE as its default.
4. Slackware -> try this if you REALLY want to know how linux works.
compile compile compile and prepare for hunting down deps manually.
but its very stable and the oldest distro around. This distro is
useful if you want to run server.
5. Gentoo -> automated slackware, everything is compile from scratch
but with 'emerge' to hunt down deps. try this if you want to learn
LINUX more.

from my experiences, Fedora is the one you should choose then try to
move to slack or gentoo if you have learn enough.
