OK, I thnik my two linux and win xp,boxes are stable after a very 
close lightening strike a few months ago.
   I would like to get back to getting the two systems talking to 
each other.
   I have lan cards in both and no router so use twisted pair 
cabling.
   The first question that comes to mind is, how do I determine if 
the Ubuntu box card is good and not dead after the lightening strke.  
The rest of the system seems normal.  The next has to be where do I 
start.
  I am also researching in help, but am not good at finding answers 
there.  Hopefully I will be able to get two meetings of a local LUG 
in early spring.
