Next, because you haven't got a router or anything else giving your
network configuration, you will have to give each card an I.P. address

On Windows just open 'network connections' select the card, right click
and select properties and then select TCP/IP, click 'properties' and
enter the details in the box

On Linux type configure eth0 address=<i.p.-address> netmask=255.255.255.0

Typically you would use one of the 'private' address spaces like
192.168.0.n - 192.168.255.255 (mask 255.255.255.0) to avoid any problems
when linking to the internet.

Finally you need to add a routing use netstat -r to display the current
table chances are it will just be a couple of lines so add
route add net 192.* -netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0
route add default gw <Ipaddress of windows box>
The first line tells the kernel where to find a particular set of
addresses the second sets it as a default gateway for any not found any
other way.

If you connect your Linux box to the internet and want your windows box
to go through the Linux box as a gateway, then enter the address of the
Linux box into windows as the default gateway and alter your routing
accordingly (you then need to enable ip forwarding and set up rules in
iptables the firewall software.
