There is a free version called Freespire. Both enable you to use CNR. I have
used both, but found the kernel frequently outdated and was frustrated by the
non-standard Linux file structure. It modifies the structure in order to make
it more Windows-like experience, which is not to my taste. Linspire also
re-brands lots of open source applications and I was never comfortable with
that (although it is allowed under GNU licensing). I also had problems with the
lack of control in the bootloader. Aside form these peculiaries, Freespire is a
good beginners desktop OS.

My point (which some seemed to have missed) is that CNR down supports other
distros. The Ubuntu client is the first and others will follow. This makes
available over 32000 packages which may or may not be available in your usual
repositories. I found that most of the CNR packages that I tried to install
were either available in my enlarged base of Ubuntu repositories or were simply
re-branded ones I already installed. Others with a more basic setup may find
more is available. what is nice about CNR is the ease with which you can
install. Simply choose it from the menu and choose to 'open' in with CNR client
and you are in business.

There are other good sources of packages such as getdeb.net. There are also
other package sources such as Automatix, Wine Doors, Autopackage and Klik.
These will not be available for all distros. All work within Ubuntu for sure as
I have used them all and have vried opinions on their usefulness.

I advise all and sundry to stay as far away from Linspire as possible.

My stepfather bought a PC online with Linspire pre-installed, and

found Linspire to operate on a "taxi-meter" style (his phrase, not

mine) similar to M$ products, requiring payment of fees at every turn

to activate features, acquire software and download updates! Not the

"linux way" at all! Charging for premium customer support is one

thing, but this was appalling!

Disappointed, stepdad's unplugged it and put it in the attic; this was

his first venture into Linux, and it's soured him on it altogether.

I've shown him other distros, told him that's not how it should be. I

hope I can convince him to try something else...

Of course, had he *asked* me beforehand, I would have advised against

Linspire on "ideological" grounds, given that Linspire is one of the

developers that caved to fears of M$ patent-infringement lawsuits and

cut a deal with the Beast From Redmond.

So, now Linspire is attaching itself to Ubuntu's coattails? Charming.
