            Hi Gary,

After reading the info on the Linspire site, I had the impression that

the reason you pay about $50 for the CD was for the licenses for plug

ins and other functionality gained via the installation of otherwise

non-free components. But what you say below suggests that this is not

the case. That is troubling, to say the least. It's bad enough

having to pay for what should be freeware, but to then have to pay

every time you want to use a program that has non-free components,

well, that's not the Linux way, nor the Ubuntu way, as I understood it.

Freespire is the open source and free version of Linspire. It offers the same
functionality and has full access to the CNR repositories.

Freespire/ Linspire is geared towards novices coming from the Windows
experience. Due to licensing agreements with Microsoft Linspire offers many
Windows libraries and codecs. The migration from Windows to Freepire should be
realtively painless. Even the theme is made to look like Windows.

Linspire is geared towards enterprise solutions. The company has recently
offered to tailor its OS to the needs of individual companies in the same way
that rPath does. Individuals should use Freespire, not Linspire.

CNR respositories are now available to Ubuntu users and it is expected to open
to other distros starting with Debian and then Fedora later on.
