I'm all for alternatives to the bloated Zonealarm, the breaks-everything-else Norton, and the overstuffed-and-lumbering McAfee. I've tried several under Windows XP, including (recently) Comodo.
Initially, Comodo seemed to have just the right balance of blocking-things-silently and asking-user-to-okay, but then, for some common, well-known application (I don't remember exactly which...Yahoo Messenger, perhaps?), it just kept asking and asking, and no matter how many times I *tried* to tell it that said application was to be "trusted", no matter how many times I clicked the "remember my answer" checkbox, it refused to remember my instructions and kept popping up question dialogs from the system tray every 15 seconds! Frustrated, I reverted to my previous long-term favorite, the (free) Ashampoo Firewall. I HIGHLY recommend Ashampoo software in general, and in fact I still use their firewall and CD burning suite on the Windows side of my dual-boot laptop.
