I can get Norton anti-virus and Norton Firewall free from my ISP, but I don't like them they are too resource consuming and too intrusive. I use Clamwin (AVG is also a good choice) and Sygate Firewall. The free version is fairly basic, but it has all of the essential features. I don't like Zonealarm for the same reason that I don't like Norton.
I also make sure that my router uses encryption for wireless and that it is well password protected. Also like a little program called Winpatrol for Windows. It has a free version. It is resident in the system tray and detects changes to the system and asks you if you give permission to make changes. It allows you to turn control IE helpers and startup items. Very handy.
