Yes, they've made various improvements, <snicker> in sound--as one
Fedora developer wrote on some list or another, "Now we're giving people
choices, none of which work."

It's possible that you can fix it on Ubuntu with the following.
Whatever sound card it is, e.g., if it were using the snd_hda_intel
module, you can try adding the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba

This problem has been more prevalent on the Acers but but I've seen the
fix listed for Toshiba as well.

To figure out what module is being used try

lsmod |grep snd

There will be several things, but hopefully, one will indicate what's
being used for your hardware. Then, as you might have noted, even
though the module has underscores, e.g., snd_hda_intel in the alsa-base
file do it with hyphens, snd-hda-intel.

This is just a guess and not a guarantee. I believe the problem is with
the theoretical improvements various distros have made to how the system
deals with sound. I don't think that it has anything to do with the dual
boot thingie.

Willow: Old reliable? Yeah, great. There's a sexy
nickname.
Buffy: Well, I didn't mean it as...
Willow: No, it's fine, I'm Old Reliable.
Xander: She just means, you know, the geyser. You're like a
geyser of fun that goes off at regular intervals.
Willow: That's Old Faithful.
Xander: Isn't that the dog that the guy had to shoot...?
Willow: That's Old Yeller.
Buffy: Xander, I beg you not to help me.
